The Årsta Society for Fredrika Bremer Studies was founded in 1985 to spread awareness about the author Fredrika Bremer’s life and legacy. The Society supports research concerning Fredrika Bremer and seeks to make her works accessible to a broader public, primarily through publications, one such example being Årsta slott - en kulturskatt i Haninge (Årsta Castle - Haninge’s Cultural Treasure, in Swedish) by Gunnel Furuland and Gunnel Stenqvist. Årsta Castle was the summer home of Fredrika Bremer’s father and she spent much time there as a child as well as in her later years.

Fredrika Bremer’s life and work are also acknowledged through a number of events. One such highlight is the annual celebration of Fredrika Day on the 19th of September. The Christmas concert with evocative music and reading in Österhaninge church, which Fredrika herself frequented, should not be missed either. The Society’s newsletter is sent out to members at least four times a year, containing new and interesting texts, events and all else pertaining to Fredrika and Årsta.

The Årsta Society has custody of a unique collection of objects connected to Fredrika Bremer, deposited with the Årsta Castle Museum, where it can be viewed during guided visits.

As a society, we always wish to improve and broaden our activities. If you have criticism or praise to share - or perhaps wish to get involved? - feel free to contact the Society Board.
